I have Stripe connected for payment processing. I noticed in the client portal the amount it shows by the credit card field is the invoice amount without Stripe fees (which are 2.9% + $0.10). I haven’t actually run a credit card yet and don’t know if that number changes when you click “Pay Now”, but if not that would mean I’d be paying for the Stripe fees entirely, which I don’t want to do.
What I want is for the run amount to be the invoice total plus the Stripe fees. In an attempt to make this happen, in the payments settings under Limits/Fees I set the Fee Percent to 2.9% and Fee Amount to $0.10, but this adds a surcharge line to every invoice. I don’t want to alter my invoices - I don’t want to automatically include a surcharge line item to my invoices, as not everyone pays by credit card and it wouldn’t make sense for charge them for Stripe fees.
Is there no way to have the invoices unaltered and just have the Stripe fees added to the total when paying by card in the client portal?
It’s weird. When I first used Fee Percent and Fee Amount in the Limits/Fees tab under Settings / Online Payments / Stripe, it did actually add a line item to my existing invoices. When I retried that approach now it doesn’t seem to add that line item. Is it because the first time I didn’t check Adjust Fee Percent and now this time I did?
I take it back. Setting Fee Percent to 2.9 and Fee Amount to 0.30 did add a surcharge line to the invoice, it just doesn’t show up in the products table on the PDF, only on the totals section. That messes things up for me.
What I want is for nothing about the invoice to change. No hidden surcharge line item gets added, nothing about the totals changes. I basically don’t want to see any effect of a surcharge in the invoice or on the PDF of that invoice. I just want the gateway fees to be calculated at checkout in the client portal and the card to be run for the raised amount.
Because right now it seems that if they just open the client portal, the invoice total permanently gets raised to include the gateway fees, regardless of whether or not they pay through the portal. What if they decide not to pay through the portal and instead send a check in the mail? Their invoice total still shows the raised amount.
Be careful with rules, guidelines, and laws… To sub-charge the customer for cc charges is illegal or prohibit in some locations and/or by the terms and conditions of the credit cards. This is a “cost to do business” and sellers understand that.
Usually what people do to stay out of trouble is:
offer a discount to customers if they pay through other methods;
establish a minimum purchase amount to use credit card;
offer it on specific products/services.
When it’s allowed (as far as I’ve seen), you have to disclose it on the invoice.
Take in consideration, that when you increase the invoice, let’s say by “3%”, your credit card is going to discount you by the total you are billing and for the transaction, so there’s always going to be a “left over” charge going to you (even if is not significant).
