How to add QR codes in the current IN version?

Hi there, i’ve found some ways to add QR codes to the custom template in this forum/on the issue tracker.
Sadly with and without using the $spc_qr_code variable, it only draws the code’s content as plain text to the PDF.

I think the PDF generator was changed recently, wasn’t it? Might this have changed the way to add these?

I believe you need to also add in some custom JS. Another user in slack managed to get this working, but i haven’t seen him around for a while.
