This is by design, that said it’s certainly possible the design in wrong.

That also means I need to do this after every update. I’m not very fund of manual code editing for that reason. I will try to avoid renaming the invoices. Actually giving the Invoice Subject after the Invoice number. I must say I do miss the Invoice Subject field. I added custom field but it wont’t show dashboard and the rest of the GUI. AFAIK custom files can not be included in PDF filename like Invoice-2016-265 <Client>-<Invoice Subject.pdf>
Like email for an example. You have email counter, recipient, body but you’re missing the subject. When you have subject, you can find the Invoice or email very quickly without having to open and look inside.

You should be able to set the email subject on /settings/templates_and_reminders
